Assignment 5

Artist’s Statement

Title:

Developing a body of work that conveys the feeling of the landscapes.

This enquiry was focused on building a body of work, rather than a single drawing, which was trying to convey the feeling of places in landscape drawings. This meant selecting an appropriate approach to creating the image that would convey something of the image which isn’t based in technical accuracy.

Cycle 3: Fountains Abbey

Context

Fountains Abbey is a beautiful place owned by the National Trust. Its connected to a large park and water gardens, and even when relatively crowded it has an air of tranquillity about it. I also have strong connotations with the site due to walking round it with my wife, and sometimes my children, as a break point in long journeys.

Cycle 2: Line study

Intent

In this cycle I’m shifting focus to studies using line over tone. That is:

  • Using line over tonal blocks to represent the image;
  • To convey a strong impression of the scene;
  • To convey texture using line;

This is a bit more of a stretch, as my line work has left something to be desired over time. I’ve included it at this stage because I suspect that it is an area where improvement would lead to benefits elsewhere.

Cycle 1: Tonal study

Intent

For this first cycle I’ve decided to follow up on my tutor’s suggestion of focusing on tonal work. Thus I would like to achieve the following:

  • Tonal drawing with no visible outline.
  • Grey scale rather colour.
  • Matching tone and medium to subject; and
  • Conveying the feeling of the scene – rather than accurate technical portrayal.

Visit to the National Gallery

It is strange, given I work in London and am on an Art Degree, that this was my first visit to the National Gallery. In visiting the Gallery I needed to focus, at least to a degree, and so I chose to consider primarily Landscape images. That didn’t restrict me too much, as there are large numbers of them in there, but it at least allowed me to have a meaningful approach.

Art being viewed…

Legacies of Biafra

Back in February I visited this exhibition, and for various reasons I keep coming back to think about it. Unfortunately you couldn’t take photographs and there is little about the exhibition available on the Internet. The works were highly varied, within the theme of the Nigerian civil war. This is a subject that I have little personal connection with, but it has made me think about artists’ responses to such events and the fallout from them.

Art being viewed…

One of the influences that I have is a regular supply of images and works from the Internet. Some of these come through Twitter (See https://twitter.com/waddy100), others from new articles and so forth. Most of these will go unrecorded, and float through. Some of these end up referenced in blogs and considered more formally – and a very few will end up printed and considered in my physical sketchbooks. I view and collect far more material, however, than I would ever write up in any formal way. I have, therefore, decided to acknowledge and comment on a small proportion of it. This is, in effect, an electronic extension of my physical sketchbook for recording the art I view and my thoughts on it.
