One of the areas that I have a growing interest in is the use and application of art as a catalyst for change. I came an interesting section about drawing with rhythm in Andrew Loomis’ book “Figure Drawing for all its worth.” (PDF available here.) He describes drawing with rhythm as following through the major lines of forms in various graceful curves as part of the setup. The drawing on page 136 is of particular interest in this respect. As an experiment in this approach I tried a drawing of a dancer. Although I am unhappy with many of the details of the image, the basic idea of building up the form with interesting curves was very useful. Now I just need to learn a whole bunch about anatomy.
Next step in my colour mixing journey.
Starting to look at colour theory, and decided to start with Betty Edwards (of Drawing on the Right side of the brain fame) book to start with. This starts with a couple of simple exercises: (a) Colour I like and Dislike; and (b) Colours of the seasons. Not exactly great art, but it was quite fun.
You have been a thoughtful student and have demonstrated to me that you have the ability undertake a degree level piece of academic research. Your drawing skills have developed but I think embarking on the degree will really speed that up and help you to commit more time to drawing. Importantly, your understanding of art and its possibilities for you as a maker has really developed. In particular, there is plenty of scope for you to continue to ask questions of drawing as it relates to sculptural practices. Best of luck with your future studies. Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills
I like the submitted print and narrative images, and am starting to get an idea of how to approach work using the techniques indicated within the course. The quality of the self-portrait indicates how far I have to go in figure drawing, as this is probably the most significant area that needs improvement in the submitted works. I think I have many more hours of observational drawing ahead of me before I fully crack that.
