Article: When Does Avant-Garde Art Go Too Far?

I found this article very interesting, despite the reference to an artist shooting a dog. The following quote, to my mind, is key:

“[Shot Dog Film] was the most aggressive way I could think of to show a film,” he explained, “the most damaging thing that I could do to the audience by showing a film.”

It pretty much acknowledges what I’ve wondered: Is much of the art of there put in place simply to shock. The again I can’t claim to be fully innocent of it myself, with Party Girl under my belt:
