Net Anthology and Street View

A slight aside, but one of the criteria for the course involves showing an understanding of the contemporary context of Art. To try to help get up to speed on the current art scene I’ve been subscribing to various Art-based newsletters. One of these pointed me to the Net Art Anthology. This lists various art projects on the internet, and has some interesting concepts in the mix.

As an example, “The Nine Eyes of Google Street View” is a project by Jon Rafman. He has basically searched through the Google image archives finding interesting images to publish. An interesting aspect of the project is that the cameras are fully automated, and so the eye of the photographer part of the artistic equation.

Clearly the view of Jon Rafman is involved in selection, and he decides what to place into an art context. I found the follow quote of interest:

“THIS VERY WAY OF RECORDING OUR WORLD, THIS TENSION BETWEEN AN AUTOMATED CAMERA AND A HUMAN WHO SEEKS MEANING, REFLECTS OUR MODERN EXPERIENCE.”
